A research team led by the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed an all-superconducting magnet system that reached a steady-state magnetic field of 35.1 tesla and maintained it for 30 minutes on Sept. 27, according to Xinhua. The strength is about 700,000 times that of Earth’s magnetic field, setting a new national record.

The system uses a nested structure combining high- and low-temperature superconducting magnets, overcoming challenges such as uneven stress distribution and electromagnetic interference. It also completed a safe demagnetization process, confirming its engineering reliability.

The achievement could advance domestic development of high-end scientific instruments, with potential applications in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, aerospace propulsion, superconducting maglev, and clean energy transmission, while also supporting nuclear fusion research. [Xinhua, in Chinese]
